Harmony at Colony Park Picks up Top Awards for Superb New Urbanism Design
ANAHEIM, CA — On Thursday, June 26, at the 45th-Annual Gold Nugget Awards, Brookfield Homes’ Harmony at Colony Park received two of the building industry’s highest honors when it was recognized as Best Attached Housing and Attached Suburban Residential Project of the Year. A highlight of the Pacific Coast Builders Conference, the Gold Nugget Awards celebrates stellar achievements in architectural design and land use planning.
Brookfield’s submissions on behalf of Harmony at Colony Park in the Anaheim Colony Historic District competed against 520 entries submitted by 14 Western states. As a recipient of the Grand Award, the community has been acknowledged as “The Best in the West,” by showcasing superiority and innovation in addressing complex design and building issues.
Built by Brookfield Homes and designed by MVE & Partners, Harmony at Colony Park is a classic urban infill community built on a site that previously housed warehouse industrial and commercial buildings. The site’s location in the heart of downtown Anaheim makes it a prime setting for a classic new-home community that not only provides homes near work, recreation, and transportation, but also honors the city’s past with architecture designed to complement historical structures within the Anaheim Colony Historic District.
Extensive and collaborative planning with the local Historical District Task Force, Anaheim Redevelopment Agency, and City of Anaheim Community Development Departments ensured the success of this new urbanism endeavor. The site’s existing street grid was reutilized and the site was transformed from forgotten, undeveloped land into a verdant community anchored by an expansive park, resort-caliber recreation facility, and pedestrian-oriented streets and paseos that connect to other city thoroughfares and invite residents to enjoy the outdoors.
“The design at Harmony at Colony Park represents an effective use of land as well as a reconnection with the neighborhood,” said Darin Schoolmeester, Design Principal at MVE & Partners. “The new community compliments the historic Colony Park District not only with a reconnection of the existing street pattern, but also with authentically detailed Early California and French Normandy architectural styles. This community is designed for pedestrians by concealing garages and integrating paseos, sidewalks, front porches, front doors, and highly detailed architecture into the public realm and experience.” MVE & Partners brought more than 34 years of creative and practical architecture and building industry experience to Colony Park.
As a GreenPoint Rated community, Colony Park takes the guesswork out of evaluating green features and enables home buyers to compare newly built homes on a level playing field. Colony Park will achieve a GreenPoint Rated certification as each home is built, because of Brookfield’s carefully planned green design that conserves natural resources while promoting walkability and sustainability. The homes received “points” for exceeding T-24 Energy Guidelines by 25% and incorporating environmentally friendly elements such as tankless water heaters, drought-resistant native plants, irrigation controllers, Energy Star appliances and paints that emit low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Many of these features help reduce the demand on Earth’s resources…and homeowners’ wallets.
Comprised of two neighborhoods—Harmony and Legacy—Colony Park invites home shoppers to discover the signature style, warmth, and details for which Brookfield is known: Whirlpool stainless steel appliances, standard granite, Kohler fixtures, private attached garages for extra storage and convenience, as well as intercom systems, providing communication between the front door and any phone in the home, which all come standard.
